There is a new line of Delta SkyMiles American Express cards as of today and the bonus offers are high! However, can those of us who have already had the older version of the card, get a bonus on the card? My answer is…. I don’t know yet.

Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this Card. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility.
Both Rob and I have had the Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card before. We got them back in 2016. When the annual fee became due in 2017, we canceled our cards as we would not be able to take advantage of the benefits (ie-free companion ticket) that the card offered.
However, Amex also started using a great feature in that Amex will give you a heads up if you are ineligible for a sign-up bonus before submitting the final application. They will even ask you whether you want to proceed with the credit check after they make you aware that you are ineligible for the bonus. At that point, you can cancel the application.
Rob got an email enticing him to apply for the latest version of the Delta Skymiles Platinum card. Amex is using the term “new” and I decided that was enough for me to try to have Rob go for the card. I filled out the application and did NOT get the warning that he is ineligible for a sign-up bonus.
I will be back after Rob spends (I spend 🙂 ) the requisite amount to get the 80,000 bonus miles ( $3,000 in purchases in the first 3 months). And now that Rob and I will soon be empty nesters, I think it will be a lot easier to take advantage of the free companion ticket so I look forward to keeping the card next year and earning an additional 20,000 bonus miles after his first anniversary of Card Membership.
