Both Rob and I are approaching 50.  Rob will be 50 next April, 2017 and myself, the year after, in May, 2018.  What other way  than taking a big trip would I want to celebrate these milestones.

For Rob’s 50th, I want to go to the Amalfi Coast and Capri next summer.  (I have been dreaming of this trip for years)  I do not forsee us being able to use points for our stay because 1.  There are no real hotel chains in the area and 2.  I do not have enough flexible points like Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards to use for our stay.  However, I am going to do my best to get the flights on miles and think I will be successful.

NAPLES AMALFI ITALY TOUR

I recently did a very quick search on Delta for next year (although my dates are not available yet) and saw some coach flights for 60,000 Delta SkyMiles per ticket and business class tickets for about 125,000 Delta SkyMiles per ticket.

Rob and I both have Delta SkyMiles balances but not close to what tickets would cost in miles.  We also both have American Express Membership Rewards points which we can transfer to Delta and actually may do this to accumulate some of the miles we need.

But, I was also aware about the recent increased Delta offers of 50,000 for the American Express Gold Delta SkyMiles card and 60,000 for the American Express Platinum Delta SkyMiles card.   Both Rob and I had already had American Express Gold Delta SkyMiles cards (which we canceled back in September 2015) so that 50,000 bonus offer was not available to us because you can never get an Amex bonus for the same card two times.  However, neither of us had ever had the American Express Platinum Delta card.

Before I started looking into flights to Italy, paying the $195 fee was a deal breaker for me, despite the $100 statement credit that was available with the offer.  However, once I saw the general price of flights, it was a no brainer to apply for the cards.

We got our applications in just under the wire, on July 5, 2016.  The offer expired on July 6th.  If we are able to book our flights to Italy using miles, it will more than make up for the $190 we will pay this year for the annual fee. (195 less 100 statement credit on each card-so 95 x 2).

We both got approved.  Full disclosure, Rob got approved IMMEDIATELY.  My application came in as pending and I called the next day and pushed it through.

We will each get 60,000 Delta SkyMiles after making $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months and and we each get $100 statement credit after making just one purchase with the card in the first 3 months.  I am a little nervous about this $4,000 in spend because I am currently working on another 4k in spend with this offer from the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier card.  I may need to pay for some expense in advance.

While I do not foresee us using these cards once we meet the minimum spend requirements, this card has some attractive features, especially if you fly Delta often.  You can read about the card here.

Update-we got the flights to Italy, BUSINESS CLASS! with these Delta SkyMiles.
