American Express has added Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance to some of their higher end cards. These cards being the American Express Platinum, American Express Business Platinum, Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card, American Express Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card and the American Express Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Credit Card.
The benefit kicks in if you purchase a round trip ticket entirely with your Amex Card and a covered reason cancels or interrupts your trip. Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance will reimburse your non-refundable expenses purchased with your Card, up to $10,000 per trip and up to $20,000 per card per 12 consecutive month period.
Also note, that if you pay for your tickets using the Amex pay with points feature this trip would be covered. Also a trip that you use miles or points for and pay the taxes with your Amex card would be covered too.
