The Points Mom

Rob Canceled His Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card

Back in 2018, Rob got this card (then an SPG card) with a 35,000 point bonus, which seems so light when compared to the bonus offers nowadays.

Over the years, I paid the $125 annual fee as I always found a way to use the free Bonvoy night award that I got with the card. The free Bonvoy night was always handy for college visits. However, currently, I am finding it harder to use my free nights and I have no more college visits on the horizon. And just recently, with Marriott going to dynamic pricing for their redemption stays, I have even less confidence that I will be able to put this Free Night to use.

However, before I canceled Rob’s card, I chatted with Amex and moved as much of the credit limit on this card that they would let me, to Rob’s American Express Blue Business Plus Credit Card. Remember, we want to try to NOT lose credit lines as that will negatively affect our utilization ratios.

And before I actually pulled the trigger, I did ask Amex about a downgrade option which is always better than canceling, but, unfortunately, there wasn’t one. So I canceled my card!  Don’t forget, canceling a card has a small impact on your credit score as long as other positive financial factors are in place.  You can read about the effect of canceling a card on your credit score here.
