Bye Bye Citi Hilton Honors Visa Signature Card, I Want To Be Ripe For A Hilton Honors Sign-Up Bonus With The New Amex Hilton Honors Cards

Bye Bye

Who else got this email yesterday?

Hi, Cindy. We are writing to let you know that Citi’s co-branded credit card relationship with Hilton is ending. Your Citi Hilton Honors™ Visa Signature account will be transferred to American Express on January 30, 2018 (“the Replacement Date”).

You see, back in June, Hilton dropped Citi in favor of Amex as its exclusive card issuer.  Don’t forget, Amex already issues the American Express Hilton Honors Card and the American Express Hilton Honors Surpass Card.

Yesterday Amex announced the details of an upgraded American Express Hilton Honors co-branded credit card portfolio, which features 3 new Cards, the Ascend (now known as the Surpass), the Aspire and a business card.  In addition, Amex is giving the current Amex Hilton no fee card an upgrade by removing foreign transaction fees.  You can view the Amex press release here. Details by me about the new cards soon, but you can be sure that there will be sign-up bonuses with these new Amex Hilton Honors cards.

If you have never had the Amex Hilton NO Fee card, make sure you cancel your Citi card before it is converted to this card. If you don’t, you will never be eligible for a sign-up bonus for the no fee card which has been as high as 75,000 Hilton Honors points in the past. I made the same decision back when Amex JetBlue got transferred to Barclaycard.

Even though Rob and I have both had this Amex Hilton no fee card in the past (I actually have it now), I am still canceling both mine and Rob’s Citi cards, just in case there is some way we can take advantage of a new sign-up bonus.  I don’t want to take any chances of missing one.

Don’t let Citi convert your card to Amex if you want to be eligible for a bonus….cancel the card!
