If you followed #8 on my Lets Get Started page, hopefully, you have opened frequent flyer accounts for your children.  However, a few airlines, like American Airlines, have account mileage expiration dates due to lack of activity in an account. With American, kids can’t drum up activity by using American Airlines Citi cards and Barclays cards like adults can. And unfortunately, American Airlines AAdvantage miles still expire after 18 months of inactivity, despite many other airline loyalty programs recently ditching expiration dates!

This affected me in that I was recently alerted to the fact that my kids’ American AAdvantage miles were due to expire this summer. After all, with the lack of travel over the last 18 months, this did not come as a surporse to me. So, I took a very simple step of donating 1,000 miles (the minimum) from each of my chidren’s accounts which reset the clock another 18 months. American Airlines allows you to donate to 4 different charities. It’s a win-win…doing good and extending our expiration dates.

And the change was reflected immediately as you can see from the screen shots below. Yay! We have another 18 months to play with!
