If you go to the American Express Membership Rewards site, there is an answer to this question.  It reads as follows:

“Points are not your property. You can’t transfer points to any other person or program account.”

However, I have many of Rob’s loyalty programs “linked” to my American Express Membership Rewards account.  When linking on the Amex site, you need only put in the loyalty number to “link” it to your Membership Rewards account.  There is no verification that the actual account is yours.  In fact, I just transferred some of my Membership Rewards points into Rob’s Delta SkyMiles account for a free flight to Denver this summer, through the Membership Rewards website.  There is definitely a glitch in the system.  Shhh…

Further along in my research, I have read that Membership Rewards will only let you transfer points to a frequent flyer account with your last name name on it and transfers will be denied to accounts with different last names.  I have not tried to do this.  I will let you know if I ever do.  For right now, luckily Rob has my last name so as long as the rules stay like this, we are good!  But the answer may be subjective…
