The Points Mom

Mint.com

The plan to earn points for free travel by paying for everything by credit card only works if you are timely about paying your credit card bills. Carrying balances and accumulating interest charges, even though you still earn points, could end up costing you more than had you just booked a trip and paid for it. So it is important that you are on top of paying off your bills.

Once you have a lot of credit cards like me, it can get tricky keeping track of all of the different bills that come in as well as the payment due dates. I recently signed up for Mint.com, a free service that among other things, sends an email alert to remind you to pay bills. I appreciate having this extra safeguard in place just in case I did not receive a bill, misplaced it, etc. It has happened.

Although I really only use Mint.com for the due date email alert, Mint.com has many other great features such as tracking your finances, budgeting, etc. It is definitely worth checking out.

Also don’t forget, if you are close to a due date and you do not think your payment will get there on time via the mail, you can pay your credit card bills at the applicable bank. For me, I can walk into a Chase or Citibank on the due date and make the payment. Unfortunately there is no American Express office close to where I live so I need to be much more careful with my Amex bills. At least I have Mint.com to help me with this!
