Recall that every year, American Express Platinum and Business Platinum card members receive up to $200 a year in statement credits when incidental fees, such as baggage fees, flight-change fees, in-flight food and beverage purchases, and airport lounge day passes, are charged by the airline to your Platinum card account. In addition, with the American Express Gold card, you get up to $100 a year in statement credits for incidental airline fees.
I have a platinum card and the airline that I chose to receive my $200 credit in the year 2015 was United. We flew United to Telluride (don’t forget for free!!) and I knew we were going to have lots of baggage fees, as in addition to our regular bags we also travel with our skis.
We flew out of New York on February 14th. We paid $145 in baggage fees and I used my American Express Business Platinum to pay for the fees. Just 2 days later, on February 16th, there was a credit on my bill for the $145.
So I only have $55 more when I fly home. Since we travel with our skis at least once every year, I may need to get another card with baggage fee credits. There are a couple of other ones out there. You can read about them here.
