My First New Card Of 2018-The Chase Hyatt Visa

The lobby of the Andaz Amsterdam, Prinsengracht

I didn’t have plans to apply for a new credit card yesterday, but various factors led to my application and subsequent approval for the Chase Hyatt card.

First, I got an email from World Of Hyatt inviting me to apply for the card.  Recall that with the card, you get 40,000 World Of Hyatt Points after you spend $2,000 in the first 3 months.  Second, I have a new soft spot for Hyatt as we just got back from Amsterdam and absolutely loved our stay at the Andaz Amsterdam, Prinsengracht.  It has led me to want to stay at some more Andaz hotels. Third, it just so happens that a new Hyatt Place opened in St. Petersburg, FL, where Jessie and I have traveled over the last six springs for a swim meet, always staying in either a Marriott or Hilton.  This year, we will be staying at the new Hyatt Place on points and a little cash.  Guess which card I will use for my hotel bill?

Note, the annual fee for the card of $75 is not waived the first year but the 40,000 bonus points are worth more than the fee.  I will reevaluate the card the second year when the annual fee becomes due as to whether I will be keeping this card

Note that my application came back as pending so like I always advise all of you, I called Chase lending services and offered to move credit from an existing line.  I have a lot of Chase cards and plenty of credit to reallocate.  After some detailed questions about my application, Chase happily obliged and transferred some credit to this new account.  Something I was worried about was getting denied because of being over the 5/24 rule, after all, I have gotten a bunch of new cards over the last year.  But applying for a Chase Hyatt is not impacted by the 5/24 rule-whew!

Another thing to note, is that I used to have this card.  With Chase, you can get another bonus for the same card so long as you haven’t had the card for 24 months.  I had canceled this card back in 2014, so I was good with the time period.

Also don’t forget even if I don’t accumulate enough points with the bonus and the minimum spend to get me to the Hyatt I want, I can always transfer points from my Chase Ultimate Rewards account as World Of Hyatt is an Ultimate Rewards transferee.

I am excited to figure out which Hyatt I will go to and when.  We’ll see….
