The Points Mom

I Downgraded My American Express Hilton Honors Surpass Card To The No Fee Hilton Amex

Last May, I got the American Express Hilton Honors Surpass card with a sign-up bonus of 100,000 Hilton Honors points.

This May, the annual fee of $75 became due.  I decided that this card is not worth $75 to me, so I downgraded this Hilton Honors Surpass to the NO FEE American Express Hilton Honors card.  Don’t forget, downgrading is a good alternative to canceling a card and I have done it often.  Also, this time I ensured that I downgraded immediately so I did not have to pay a prorated portion of the fee like I had to do when I downgraded Rob’s United card.

I made this decision to downgrade because I rarely stay at Hiltons.  If I do, I still will have the no fee card where I can earn bonus points on my Hilton stays (7:1 instead of 12:1).  I also get many of the card’s benefits through other cards that I have.  I still receive Hilton Honors Gold status because I get that through my American Express Business Platinum card.  Also, I have a much better Priority Pass Select deal with both my Chase Sapphire Reserve and my Amex Business Platinum.
