Last year, I could not pass up another Citibank offer for the CitiBusiness/AAdvantage Platinum Select World MasterCard. The offer that I took advantage of was that I got 35,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles if I spent $1500 in 3 months and an additional 10,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles if I spent $5,000 (inclusive of the $1,500) in the first 6 months of card membership. How could I not apply?

The fact that it was a business credit card concerned me a bit, but I completed the application using my social security number (no tax id number) and just like that, I was approved. Rob also has this card under a separate account. He has had this card for a long time.

I spent the $1,500 in 3 months and $5,000 within 6 months. Bam, 45,000 American Airline AAdvantage bonus points were deposited into my account! Don’t forget, I spent this $5,000 on my normal purchases. I am not buying anything extra to meet these minimum spend requirements. I just merely made the CitiBusiness/AAdvantage World MasterCard my main credit card until I hit $5,000. Then I put the card in my drawer. Oh, and the $95 fee was waived the first year!

Citibank frequently sends both Rob and I incentives to use our CitiCards. These incentives include extra bonus points on certain purchases. However, I find many of Citi’s bonus categories to be too similar to what I am already earning bonus points on with my Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Freedom and my American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card, so I rarely take advantage of these offers.

However, Rob just did take take advantage of an offer on his Citi/AAdvantage Gold MasterCard, where he needed to spend $600 by September 30, 2014 to receive 2 Admirals Club (the American Airlines Airport lounge) One-Day passes. Since he has a ski trip planned to Colorado over MLK weekend 2015 with the boys, I figured he may be able to use these. I put the card back into circulation for a bit, he spent the $600 and we are currently waiting for the passes. Ok, I know, they still need one more as there are 3 of them traveling, but I have about 5 months to figure that out. 🙂

So, what will I do when the time comes for me to pay the annual fee of $95? Unlike Chase and American Express, I have found that Citi will waive the annual fee if you so something for them as well. The last time I called to cancel a Citi card because I did not want to pay the annual fee, they made me a deal where I needed to use the card on 5 purchases (OF ANY AMOUNT) and they would waive the fee. I happily did this and will hopefully be able to do it again!
