If you are traveling overseas, most rewards earning Amex cards only offer bonus points when you spend at home.
For example, both the American Express Gold Card and the Hilton Honors American Express card, only offer the dining bonus in U.S Restaurants.
If food shopping or gas purchasing, the American Express Gold Card, Amex Everyday Preferred, American Express Business Gold Card, Hilton Honors American Express card and the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass card, only offer the supermarket and gas bonus in U.S supermarkets and gas stations where applicable.
Note, as of June 6, 2019, the American Express Gold Card offers 4x bonus points at restaurants WORLDWIDE.
Shopping overseas? To receive additional rewards with the American Express Blue Cash Preferred card and the American Express Blue Cash Everyday Card on department store purchases, the purchases must be made at a department store that is included on Amex’s list of “select major department stores” and is located in the United States.
