In Your Quest For Bonus Points, Be Careful Which Card You Choose In Foreign Countries

Unknown

I am currently in Whistler for our March ski trip.  Our FREE Westin rooms have mini kitchens.  Since we need to be out pretty early to ski, being able to have breakfast in the room is a big plus.  It makes our mornings much easier and more efficient.

The day we arrived, I went to the supermarket in the village to stock up on breakfast food.  I purposely brought my American Express Everyday Preferred Card as I earn 3X American Express Membership Rewards Points at supermarkets.  I used it our first day here at the market.

In my never-ending quest to earn bonus points, I obviously do not remember to follow my own advice at times.  First, you can only earn 3x Membership Rewards points with the Everyday Preferred card at U.S. supermarkets.  Um, the last time I checked, Canada was not part of the U.S.  In addition, I forgot about checking to see if this card is one which does not have foreign transaction fees.  After all, it is not like I wrote a post about Cards With No Foreign Transaction Fees!

I realized my mistake on my second trip to the market at Whistler this morning and used my American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Card to pay,  This card has no foreign transaction fees and I happily earned my 1x Starpoint per $1 spent instead of paying the fees!
