Starwood Preferred Guest offers Preferred, Gold, or Platinum Elite Status. You are entitled to additional privileges and benefits with each level you reach.  Preferred status is complimentary and it is what level you receive upon becoming a member of SPG.

There is a qualifying period  to earn Elite Status.  This period is from January 1st through December 31st of each year (the “Qualifying year”). Once an SPG Member reaches Elite Status, the applicable benefits will begin.  The benefits will continue through February of the second calendar year following the Qualifying  year. For example, if an SPG Member meets the Elite Status Requirement during the 2016 Qualifying Period, the SPG Member will have that elite status for the remainder of 2016, all of 2017 and January and February of 2018.

Now lets talk about the ways to reach Gold and Platinum Elite Status levels.

You reach Elite Status levels by acquiring nights or stays from the period of January 1, through December 31 of a given year as follows:

1. You reach Gold Status after completing 10 eligible stays or 25 eligible nights in a calendar year.  Note that award redemption stays and nights count toward elite status.

2. You reach Platinum Status after completing 25 eligible stays or 50 eligible nights in a calendar year. Note again here, that award redemption stays and nights count toward elite status.

You can also reach Gold status via one of your American Express cards.

If you have an American Express Platinum card or Business Platinum card, you can receive Gold status without having to meet frequent-stay minimums.  This is how I always have Gold status.

If you have a Starwood American Express credit card, each year you receive from Starwood, credit for 2 stays and 5 nights towards your Starwood Preferred Guest elite status.

Speaking of the Starwood Amex card another way to earn Gold status is by spending on the card.  If during any calendar year, eligible purchases on your card account are $30,000 or more, you will be enrolled for at least twelve months in the Gold Preferred level.  (unless you are already enrolled in an equivalent or higher level).
